3/14/2013 10:56:00 AM Primo Cubano to Play at Dance to Benefit Fukushima Children | |||||||||
The band Primo Cubano will return to Billy's Tavern, behind the business block in Thomaston, on Saturday, March 23, from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. for a night of dancing to benefit Sado Island Respite Camp in Fukushima, Japan; suggested donation at the door is $10. Primo Cubano plays traditional and contemporary Cuban music, much in the "son" tradition that later contributed to the salsa style. Billy's will close its kitchen early in order to clear the decks for dancing. Sado Island Respite Camp, a nature camp for city children to experience the outdoors, is an ongoing project of Fukushima educator Hsiao Seki. Since the earthquake- and tsunami-prompted disaster at the Daiichi nuclear facility in March 2011, the camp provides children of Fukushima Prefecture a respite from radiation exposure. The dance will be preceded by a showing of the film "Fukushima, Never Again" on Thursday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. at Rockland Public Library. More information about the situation in Fukushima will be available at the dance. The dance has been organized by the Midcoast Maine Fukushima Awareness Group and cosponsored by the Midcoast Peace and Justice Group, the Dancing 4 Fun Saturday Dance Group, Billy's Tavern and Primo Cubano. For more information, to volunteer or to make a contribution, call 594-1478. For details about the respite/recuperation project, visit hettsuisado.blogspot.com.
